AudioLai STOOM Series bridges high fidelity sound and architectural design

STOOM Series by AudioLai is an industrial loudspeaker design collection developed in Italy, positioned between high-fidelity audio engineering and architectural object design. Created by the independent studio AudioLai, the series investigates how sound systems can take on a spatial and material presence beyond conventional hi-fi typologies. Rooted in a study of industrial structures and brutalist references, STOOM Series redefines the loudspeaker as both an acoustic instrument and a constructed form, where every technical component directly informs its visual identity.

The design of STOOM Series is structured around the explicit articulation of its functional elements. Horns, cabinets, and acoustic chambers are not concealed but expressed as primary components, establishing a direct relationship between performance and form. The geometry of the horn operates as a central architectural device, extending outward with calibrated proportions that respond to sound dispersion and directional control. This approach aligns the project with architectural logic, where structure and function are inseparable and form emerges from performance.

Surfaces remain intentionally raw, emphasizing texture, density, and construction logic. Each unit reads as a constructed volume where acoustic necessity defines form with no decorative mediation. The loudspeakers operate simultaneously as technical devices and sculptural presences, capable of existing within domestic interiors, exhibition environments, or collectible design contexts without losing their functional clarity.

Despite its physical presence, STOOM Series operates as a high-performance audio system engineered for critical listening. The integration of horn-loaded drivers, controlled directivity, and active DSP amplification enables precise sound reproduction with clarity, dynamic range, and spatial definition. The system maintains coherence across listening positions, allowing sound to be perceived as a structured field rather than a diffuse output, reinforcing the relationship between acoustic engineering and spatial experience.

AudioLai was founded by brothers Stefano Lai, a former music producer and musician, and Umberto Lai, an audiophile and system designer. Their long-term research into open baffle systems and compression drivers informs the technical foundation of STOOM Series. In 2024, Maria Chiara Floriani introduced a contemporary design direction, redefining the visual language through a minimal and narrative-driven approach while maintaining the primacy of the listening experience.
