For her, memory is a voice note left without expecting an answer. She asks how time altered someone who used to be familiar, pairing playful recollections with a steady, uplifting pulse. The rhythm refuses to slow down for sadness, forcing unanswered questions to match the speed of the beat.

For those who might not know you yet, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m Sjana Rut, an Icelandic pop artist with a caffeine-sparked imagination and a huge love for storytelling in all forms. I’m constantly exploring the worlds within me and around me, and I love inviting people into those worlds through music and visuals.
If you had to bottle up your sound into just three words, which ones would you choose?
Feminine. Joyful. Human.
Which artists (not only music-related) or moments have left the biggest mark on your music?
My dad introduced me to a huge variety of music and films while I was growing up, which really shaped my openness and my deep connection to sound and stories. I’ve always been fascinated by how music can create a whole world around you.
Jean-Michel Jarre’s dreamy, otherworldly electronic atmosphere. AcDc’s pure energy and Led Zeppelin’s magnetic performances. I was also shaped by soulful and jazzy music, and obviously I love electronic music. Artists from completely different genres have all left their mark on me in different ways.
I also paint, and both painting and creating music are the truest expressions of who I am. When I create, I am myself.
When you hit play on your songs, what kind of feeling takes over?
Pure joy, movement, and fun! That’s what I strive to create. I want my music to brighten people’s day and be a part of their everyday life.
I love the idea that when this caffeine-filled Icelandic volcano of energy appears through someone’s speakers or radio, it brings a little spark into their day.
If you could team up with anyone in the world, no limits, who would be that dream collaborator?
Someone who understands the magic of pure pop! I would love to work with someone like Max Martin because of his incredible ability to create unforgettable melodies.
Ultimately, I would love a collaboration that feels fun, energetic, and full of personality.
What are you working on now, and what are your plans for the future? Anything exciting you can tell us about?
An album! Which is coming later this year, as well as a vinyl release. This album is another step deeper into the colourful soundscape I’ve been creating, and I’m really excited to share more of it soon.
Can you walk us through the story or emotion behind “Tell Me”? If you can, tell us about the storytelling and the musical approach to it.
Tell Me is about nostalgia and those moments when you think back on people who were once a huge part of your life, but who feel almost like strangers today.
It explores the curiosity that comes with wondering where they are now, how they’ve changed, and what life would be like if you could reconnect. I imagined the song almost like leaving a voice note for someone from your past, playful, and full of memories.
Musically, I wanted it to feel bright, danceable, and uplifting, while still carrying those bittersweet feelings underneath, hence the afro-beat rhythm was a perfect match!
