soft siren: Bury Me in Diamonds

soft siren: Bury Me in Diamonds

soft siren’s “Bury Me in Diamonds” follows a lost love through images of desire, shame, and a life that no longer fits. The speaker dreams in violet, meets someone after hours, and calls herself a desert flower who only knows how to love after sunset. There is a distance between the person she wants to be and the one she becomes in this relationship.

The shower scene brings that distance down to earth. Tears float in the water, the speaker prays to a God she cannot trust, and the question of how to make things right keeps returning. “When I’m with you I fade into a flower” is a strange image of surrender, while the diamonds suggest a different kind of wish: if love has left her with nothing, at least let something precious mark the end.

The song keeps circling back to the same images, with the lights in the other person’s eyes offering a glimpse of the feeling that once made everything seem divine. But the pearls, the stains, and the dust are still there. By the final refrain, being buried in diamonds sounds less like a fantasy of wealth than a wish to give this loss a value that the relationship never did.
