Stillness book by Norm Architects celebrating Japanese aesthetics in architecture and design

Stillness: An exploration of Japanese aesthetics in architecture and design from a Scandinavian perspective

A new book by Norm Architects delves into the rich interplay between Japanese aesthetics and Scandinavian design philosophies. Titled Stillness, this work investigates how two geographically distant cultures have independently developed design principles that converge in their mutual respect for nature, sensitivity to light, and dedication to craftsmanship. The exploration is both a tribute to Japanese design traditions and a reflection on their resonance with Scandinavian ideals.

The book provides compelling examples of this cultural kinship, such as the traditional Japanese tokonoma. This alcove, typically used to display art, calligraphy, or flower arrangements, carries profound symbolic and spiritual significance. In Stillness, this concept is juxtaposed with Scandinavian interpretations, including images of minimalist yet inspired designs like a wall vase holding fresh green leaves at the Sjöparken Lake Villa in Sweden. These visual comparisons highlight the shared design ethos between the two regions, emphasizing simplicity, intentionality, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen, co-founder of Norm Architects, offers insight into the creative process behind the book. Describing the journey as one of both curiosity and introspection, he reflects on the shared heritage and cross-cultural influences that have shaped both Japanese and Scandinavian design traditions. His photography, which features prominently in Stillness, captures serene landscapes and thoughtfully curated interiors in both Japan and Scandinavia, further reinforcing these shared ideals.

The book itself is a testament to craft and elegance. Bound in brown linen with 304 pages of vibrant, full-color photography, it mirrors the aesthetic principles it seeks to celebrate. Beyond the visuals, the narrative dives deep into the defining elements of Japanese architecture and design, while examining how centuries of cultural exchange have informed and enriched the Scandinavian perspective. Through years of collaboration with Japanese designers, Norm Architects have cultivated a philosophy that seamlessly integrates these two traditions, balancing restraint and complexity in their work.
