Studio Lukas Cober’s NEW WAVE Collection explores the possibilities of fibreglass
NEW WAVE, a collection by Studio Lukas Cober, showcases the experimental potential of fiberglass, blending artistic finesse with innovative design. These creations encapsulate a distinctive movement, evocative of water’s fluidity and the process-driven transformation of raw material. Each piece is meticulously crafted, with fiberglass applied layer by layer, then carefully shaped and sanded to achieve an ethereal interplay of transparency and opacity. This nuanced treatment grants the objects a subdued allure, almost as if they’re hovering between presence and absence.
Lukas Cober, founder of his eponymous studio in 2018, brings a deep-seated creative passion into each design. His background in product design from Maastricht and Lisbon, alongside a pivotal mentorship with Valentin Loellmann, has refined his dedication to form and material. However, more than his training, it is Cober’s intrinsic drive to create that shapes his unique voice within the design landscape. His focus is not on fleeting trends but on a timeless aesthetic where authenticity and craftsmanship are paramount. Whether working with wood, fiberglass, resin, or cast metal, Cober’s approach is grounded in the tactile exploration of material, making each piece a testimony to his hands-on, experimental process.
The NEW WAVE collection exemplifies this, as each item takes on a unique form that balances utility and expression. The pieces span a range of functions—furniture, wall art, and lighting—but they share an elegance derived from fluid lines and dynamic contours. Inspired by his early fascination with surfboard shaping, where functionality meets artistry, Cober’s work reflects minimalism’s richness, characterized by clean lines and thoughtfully molded volumes. The collection embodies a seamless integration of horizontal and vertical planes, capturing motion’s essence, whether in a soft undulating curve or a condensed surge of energy.
Cober’s design philosophy at Studio Lukas Cober transcends conventional functionality. While utility is valued, it remains secondary to the ongoing dialogue between form and matter. Cober’s process embraces experimentation, valuing gradual evolution and unexpected discoveries. This approach sees material as more than just a means to an end; it becomes a collaborator in an ongoing creative journey that prioritizes the piece’s expressive quality and its sculptural resonance within a space.
