When: October 5, Saturday, 2024 – Permanent
Where: A Cafe in the Field of the Can Can Factory(2-3-28, Iwata-cho, Higashiosaka, Osaka)

teamLab’s newest immersive art installation, “teamLab: Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun,” opened on October 5, 2024, in Osaka Seikan (Higashi Osaka). This innovative project takes over a demolished area of the Can Can Factory site, transforming it into a grassland that interacts with natural elements like wind, rain, and sunlight to create an ever-changing art experience. The installation highlights the connection between art and environmental phenomena, turning ordinary weather elements into extraordinary visual displays. Visitors will only be able to experience this unique art installation through “A Cafe in the Field of the Can Can Factory.”

teamLab’s vision for the “Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun” stems from their concept of creating art that exists not as a fixed object but as a dynamic result of environmental forces. As the wind moves through the grassland, it brings forth shimmering artworks that appear to float in the air. On rainy nights, the falling rain is transformed into glowing crystals, creating a surreal light show. During the day, when the sun reaches its peak, it generates a full-circle rainbow of light, blending natural beauty with artistic expression.

The collaboration between teamLab and the Can Can Factory sought to create a space that reintroduces natural phenomena into an industrial setting. By demolishing part of the factory site and turning it into an open grassland, teamLab aimed to bring back the wind, rain, and increased sunlight to the area. This emphasis on natural elements underscores teamLab’s philosophy of “Environmental Phenomena,” where art is not an independent entity but a creation born from its surrounding environment. This concept challenges the traditional understanding of art as a static object, highlighting how the environment shapes the existence and perception of the artwork.

The approach breaks away from conventional forms of artistic expression. Instead of creating physical, unchanging structures, the artworks in “Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun” are fluid and transient, relying on the interaction of air, water, and light to bring them to life. The installation pushes the boundaries of what defines art, emphasizing that the environment itself is an integral part of the creative process. The elements of nature, such as wind and rain, become not just participants but creators, crafting a living art experience that continuously evolves based on the conditions of the surrounding world.

In this installation, teamLab challenges the notion of permanence in art. Unlike a rock that maintains its form in isolation, the artworks in “Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun” only exist as long as their environment is intact. If the wind stops or the rain ceases, the artwork disappears, reinforcing the idea that the environment sustains the existence of the art. This concept invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between life and its environment, highlighting how both are interconnected and sustained by external forces.

teamLab’s “Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun” offers a profound exploration of how art and nature are inseparably linked. By turning a once-industrial site into a grassland filled with weather-driven artwork, teamLab invites people to experience art in its most organic form, where the environment is both the creator and sustainer of the artwork. Visitors can reserve tickets through the cafe’s reservation site to fully immerse themselves in this one-of-a-kind art experience.
