THYTA House by LASSA Architects is featuring stunning views and organic design
Nestled within a mountainous landscape on the island of Lefkada in Greece, the THYTA House embodies a harmonious blend of modern architecture and natural beauty. Designed by LASSA Architects as a retreat for a local family, the project integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, blending into the terrain with overlapping volumes that reduce its visual impact when viewed from the sea. Positioned along the mountain’s curvature, the house unfolds on two levels, creating a dynamic interaction between the built environment and the dramatic natural setting.
The design of THYTA House invites occupants to engage deeply with their surroundings. Upon entering, visitors are immediately drawn toward the ravine and the glittering expanse of the Ionian Sea. Curved lines and organic forms guide movement through the space, gradually revealing the structure’s thoughtful interplay with its environment. Interior spaces extend effortlessly into outdoor areas, including terraces, a loggia, a pool area, and a courtyard, fostering a continuous dialogue between inside and outside.
A striking elliptical concrete beam defines the communal areas, while private spaces such as bedrooms are discreetly integrated into the upper level’s topography. The living room and kitchen function as an open pavilion, designed to enhance transparency and connectivity. Elevated from the sloping terrain, the living room is flanked by a secluded courtyard garden that offers shade and frames the surrounding mountains and sky. Above, the elliptical roof features two oculi, allowing sunlight to illuminate the olive trees below, while a column-free pergola extends the shaded space, emphasizing views of the sea.
On the upper floor, a hallway links a family room and two bedrooms that open onto an upper garden and a terrace formed by the elliptical roof. Meanwhile, the lower level includes a studio discreetly embedded within one of the stone retention walls that shape the landscape. Planted roofs provide thermal insulation, shielding the house from intense sunlight and maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. Natural ventilation is achieved through the living room’s open design, inviting the cooling northern breeze during the evening.
The palette of materials and colors, ranging from neutral tones to subtle shades of blue, grey, and green, enhances the home’s integration with its surroundings. Construction of THYTA House relied on custom-designed offsite formwork, reflecting a meticulous approach to craftsmanship. The landscaping, with its native vegetation and aromatic gardens, enriches the sensory experience, making the THYTA House a serene and immersive retreat that celebrates the essence of its Greek island setting.
