Van Sur Les, Emmi Kuittinen: Tapio

Van Sur Les’ “Tapio” (feat. Emmi Kuittinen) is the forest deciding to answer in a language that has almost run out of speakers. The track takes the Ingrian incantation Kumae kumea metsoi, heläe metsoi heleä and folds it into a slow ritual pulse, the artist layering organic electronic textures and wooden percussion around Emmi Kuittinen’s vocals so that the hum and the ring become the only steady thing left.

At the centre stands the contradiction of invoking what is already fading: the spirit is summoned precisely because the culture stands on the edge, the heartfelt call carrying both the joy of remembrance and the weight of knowing each repetition might be among the final ones. The song holds this tension without release, the fragile melodies circling the same lines until the act of calling itself becomes the proof that the grove still rings.
