Zeropixel Architects designs a modern retreat in Apokoronas
The Canyon House, designed by Zeropixel Architects, is a stunning four-bedroom holiday residence located on a sloped plot in the Apokoronas region. Tailored for a young couple seeking a serene vacation retreat and optimized for year-round short-term rentals, the project takes full advantage of the site’s allowable building area and westward orientation. This positioning provides breathtaking views of the White Mountains to the south and Souda Bay to the north while overlooking a dramatic gorge.
Careful analysis of the site guided the placement of the residence along the plot’s eastern edge, ensuring both privacy and optimal vistas. The architects employed advanced tools, including drones and survey equipment, to design layouts that align harmoniously with the land’s natural contours. The resulting structure is composed of three interconnected volumes, each strategically positioned to embrace the steep terrain while offering expansive views from every angle.
The northernmost volume houses the primary living spaces, including a kitchen with an island, a dining area, and a spacious living room. A partially separating wall with a fireplace creates distinct yet connected zones within this open-plan layout. Outside, a semi-covered kitchen and dining area extend into a courtyard featuring an infinity pool, outdoor shower, and ample lounging space. This outdoor area maintains a sense of seclusion, despite its openness to the stunning landscape.
The central volume is dedicated to private quarters, comprising three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and private courtyard. Beds are oriented toward the sea, ensuring unobstructed views and a peaceful atmosphere. On the lower level, a secluded gathering area with a fireplace and jacuzzi offers a cozy retreat with panoramic vistas of the mountains and sea.
The master suite occupies the third volume, connected to the main house via an atrium. Designed to maximize privacy and visual connection with the landscape, the suite includes an open bathroom with a large bathtub overlooking the scenery. A private patio with a jacuzzi and outdoor shower completes this luxurious enclave, offering unparalleled comfort and intimacy.
The Canyon House exemplifies a seamless integration of contemporary design with the rugged beauty of Apokoronas. By harmonizing with the land’s steep contours and using sustainable materials, the project respects its environment while delivering luxurious living spaces. It achieves a balance between privacy and openness, creating a versatile space that functions as both a private sanctuary and a rental property.
