Dion Hall introduces illuminated menu board at Supernormal Melbourne

Dion Hall introduces a new illuminated menu board object for Supernormal in Melbourne, extending a long-term collaboration with restaurateurs Andrew McConnell and Jo McGann that has evolved over more than fifteen years. Developed as part of the ongoing design of Supernormal, the intervention is positioned at the restaurant’s threshold, where it defines the entry sequence through light, structure, and orientation. The object operates not only as signage but as a spatial device, marking the transition from exterior to interior while establishing the tone of arrival.

The Supernormal menu board is conceived as a freestanding, light-emitting object, constructed from a brushed stainless steel housing enclosing a softly diffused illuminated panel. The surface emits a warm and even glow, providing legibility while contributing to the atmosphere of the space. Its proportions and rounded internal frame give the object a contained visual presence, while the exposed cable and support structure introduce a direct expression of its technical function.

Positioned on a single cylindrical support, the object reads as a vertical marker that anchors circulation and directs movement. Its placement aligns with sightlines at the entrance, allowing the menu to be read as part of the spatial sequence instead of as an applied graphic element. The illumination enhances visibility without dominating the environment, reinforcing its role as both functional interface and architectural component.

Supernormal, widely recognised within Melbourne’s dining landscape for its contemporary Asian-influenced approach under Andrew McConnell, has been shaped through continuous adjustments over time. Melbourne-based Dion Hall, whose practice spans interior architecture and object design, has contributed to this evolving environment through a series of precise interventions responding to use, atmosphere, and memory. The new menu board continues this process, extending an established design language through a focused addition.
