Jessica Mar: Walla Walla

Jessica Mar: Walla Walla

Jessica Mar’s “Walla Walla” finds a reason to hit the road without needing much of a destination. Two people pack a map, a playlist, and some snacks, then agree to take their time. The trip matters more than arriving, and the repeated “We’ll never really get there anyway” makes that clear.

There’s a little uncertainty beneath the cheerful drive. The pair are “just killing all our time,” but they’re fine with not having things figured out yet. The song also looks back at a time when they were “faking like we did before,” giving this new beginning a reason to exist beyond the pleasure of getting away. Moving forward beats staying somewhere that no longer works.

Mar wrote “Walla Walla” as a metaphor for a new beginning in her own life. The lyrics keep that change light, with the destination almost becoming a joke between the two people in the car. They have no clear plan, and that’s part of the appeal. For now, they can keep driving.
