Wallners: Movie Stars

Wallners: Movie Stars

Wallners’ “Movie Stars” puts celebrity trips to Mars next to the ordinary changes happening back on Earth. Friends are getting married, NASA is heading for the Moon, and the speaker is bored with life and tired of the news. The repeated lines about movie stars disappearing into space sound almost casual, but the thought keeps returning to someone they cannot quite leave behind.

The line “I know Artemis is leaving / And I think I’m over you” brings the two subjects together without making much of a fuss about it. Space travel belongs to the news; getting over someone is a private matter, but both keep moving forward whether the speaker is ready or not. Even the claim of being over this person sits beside the memory of watching them leave.

By the end, the words shrink to fragments, and “life goes by” repeats until it becomes almost detached from any specific event. The stars and the celebrity headlines keep moving out of reach, while the thought of one person stays. Wallners leave that gap open rather than trying to resolve it.
