Villa Mahler by Philipp Architekten reflects minimalist harmony in concrete and timber

Villa Mahler by Philipp Architekten is a minimalist residence in southern Germany designed for a young artist. The house combines exposed concrete, black steel and charred timber to create a calm, sculptural composition that balances protection and openness. Formed as an L-shaped structure, the villa is defined by precision, restraint and an unwavering focus on material honesty.

Handcrafted bronze and wood furniture designed for Villa Mahler interiors

Facing the street, the building presents a closed and private façade composed of vertically arranged charred timber slats and smooth concrete surfaces.

The dark texture of the wood contrasts with the pale concrete, producing a quiet rhythm across the exterior. Towards the rear, Villa Mahler opens to the garden through floor-to-ceiling glazing that floods the interiors with daylight.

This transition from opacity to transparency defines the architectural gesture, turning the rear elevation into a soft threshold between interior and nature.

Inside Villa Mahler, the material palette continues without compromise. The entrance foyer is lined with blackened steel and bare concrete, leading into a lofty living hall that rises more than five metres high.

The open space connects the kitchen, dining and living areas in a single continuous volume, filled with light that shifts across the surfaces throughout the day.

The interior feels both industrial and tactile, its atmosphere shaped by the interplay of raw textures and precise detailing.

Shimmering woven carpet by Nathalie Van der Massen inside the living hall

Much of the Villa Mahler’s character comes from the collaboration between architect Anna Philipp and the Black Forest craftsmen Gebrüder Eichkorn, who developed custom metal, wood and bronze finishes for the project.

Every surface and object was refined by hand, giving the interiors a sense of depth and permanence. Belgian textile designer Nathalie Van der Massen contributed a large golden carpet woven with Trevira, linen and lurex yarns.

Its worn texture introduces warmth and a subtle sense of imperfection within the strict geometry of the space.

The private wing of the house runs parallel to the street and includes bedrooms, a library and guest areas. Here, large vertical windows face the garden, creating a connection to the surrounding trees.

Furniture pieces in scorched oak and bronze continue the material language of the architecture, emphasizing a sense of unity between structure and interior.

Lighting throughout the house was developed in collaboration with PSLab, ensuring optimal illumination for each space, including the staircase, living hall, and outdoor areas.

Even at night, the villa retains its clarity, glowing gently through the layers of glass and timber.

Villa Mahler reflects a contemporary interpretation of Bauhaus ideals, bringing together architects, designers and artisans in a shared pursuit of beauty through discipline and craft.
