“placeholder” captures the quiet tension of knowing you are emotionally present while being treated as temporary. Built as a soft burn rather than a dramatic confession, the song sits in the space where overthinking becomes both a defence mechanism and a form of clarity. cooper mae leans into restraint, allowing small lyrical observations to carry the weight instead of big gestures.
The track’s strength lies in its conversational tone. Lines feel spoken rather than performed, mirroring the internal monologue of someone replaying moments, rereading signals, and slowly realising their role in someone else’s uncertainty. The heartbreak here is subtle but precise. It is not about devastation, but about the slow recognition that you are filling space rather than being chosen.
For those who might not know you yet, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m cooper mae, a D.C. based singer-songwriter with a habit of overanalyzing my life out loud. My music is the perfect combination of vulnerability and witty, where I sort of dissect my feelings rather than romanticize them. I write about modern feminism, emotional accountability, and unfortunately for everyone involved…my exes.
If you had to bottle up your sound into just three words, which ones would you choose?
Intimate. Unapologetic. Unfiltered.
Which artists (not only music-related) or moments have left the biggest mark on your music?
I’m deeply influenced by artists offer sharp insight. People who say the hard things. I’m drawn to singer-songwriters who prioritize storytelling without restraint (Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo). Strong women who aren’t afraid to take up space in this world.
When you hit play on your songs, what kind of feeling takes over?
It’s a combination of feelings. I’m still getting started and learning, so a lot of times I get nervous when I hit play. As if I’ll somehow change how I feel about the song since I’ve heard it last. Other times, I feel seen. Even if nobody listened to my music, being able to take lived experiences and lived in emotions and turn them into music is healing and comforting. It almost feels like finally naming something that you’ve felt but couldn’t quite articulate before. It’s equal parts cathartic and grounding, almost like exhaling after holding something in for too long.
Can you walk us through the story or emotion behind “placeholder”?
“placeholder” is a song that I wrote after a disappointing relationship ended unexpectedly. It’s about realizing you were living somewhere that you were never meant to stay. You (or they) were meant to fill that space temporarily. It also explains how even though that experience was temporary, the individual still didn’t show up in the way that I had hoped that they would. Hence, the happier vibe to the melody and beat. It was a breath of fresh air to come to the realization that ending things was a silver lining. I wouldn’t have to try to make a situation work where affection existed, but intention did not. It’s the quiet power that comes with understanding your worth and choosing not to negotiate for permanence.
If you could team up with anyone in the world—no limits—who would be that dream collaborator?
I’d love to collaborate with any artists who blend emotional intelligence with strong creative vision, people who care deeply about nuance and narrative. Someone who values subtlety over spectacle and isn’t afraid of uncomfortable honesty. Someone like Lizzy McAlpine. I feel like our approaches could be complementary.
Outside of music, what brings you joy or keeps you grounded?
Structure and simplicity, who would have thought? My quiet daily routines, time with my dogs, and moments of stillness. I also find grounding in movement. I’m addicted to yoga and most recently pilates. Exercise keeps me connected to life outside the creative bubble.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that keeps you motivated on tough days?
“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in”
It reframes imperfection as access rather than failure. I’m less interested in polished narratives than in what leaks through when something is a little broken.
