The repeated structure gives the lyric its unease. Each verse removes another part of the imagined person, but the questions that follow shift toward the relationship between the two people. “Would you miss me if I stayed?” matters as much as leaving, because the speaker is not only asking whether absence would hurt. He is asking whether his presence still means anything. The song leaves the answer suspended between going and staying.
