KARRI Generation 2 messenger encourages independence and family connection

The Generation 2 KARRI messenger presents a refined vision for child-centered communication, designed through a close collaboration between KARRI and Pentagram.

This partnership combines KARRI’s commitment to safe technology for children aged 5 to 13 with Pentagram’s design precision, producing a device that feels intuitive, responsible, and progressive.

Founded in 2023, KARRI operates between London and Berlin, focused on creating technology that helps children communicate and grow independently before entering the digital smart world.

With its new generation device, KARRI reinforces its belief that independence can coexist with safety.

The KARRI messenger functions as a voice messaging device with a dedicated Data SIM, enabling children to communicate directly with parents through an app or with friends via other KARRI devices.

Voice messages can be exchanged individually or in groups, creating an environment that nurtures early communication skills while protecting users from the distractions and risks of smartphones.

The messenger’s GPS functionality provides a layer of reassurance for families. Parents can check real-time location, battery status, and network connection through the KARRI app, while custom Geo-fences define safe areas and send alerts when a child leaves or re-enters those zones.

This integration of hardware and software transforms the KARRI messenger into both a tool of expression and a source of peace of mind.

The collaboration with Pentagram focused on translating these values into tangible design. The process began with extensive research, involving interviews with families and children to identify what makes technology approachable and empowering for young users.

From these insights, the design team prioritized intuitive operation and tactile simplicity. The defining feature—the “slide to talk” button—encapsulates this philosophy.

Acting as a single control for recording, listening, sending, or deleting messages, it distills complex functions into one fluid gesture reminiscent of classic walkie-talkies.

The physical form of the Generation 2 messenger has been refined for comfort and independence.

Compact proportions fit easily into small hands and pockets, while an LED matrix display provides clear, minimal feedback without unnecessary distraction.

The new design also introduces multiple chat channels and quick access to settings, accompanied by a built-in flashlight that expands everyday utility.

A silicone bumper and lanyard complete the design, connecting it visually to accessories familiar from smartphones and youth fashion.

Through continuous prototyping and testing, the design was validated directly with families, ensuring that functionality aligned with real behavior and expectations.

KARRI’s Generation 2 messenger represents a thoughtful advancement in child communication technology—safe, capable, and attuned to the rhythms of growing independence
