Hotcake: Modular sound and haptic rhythm bring real presence to virtual jam sessions
Hotcake transforms the experience of making music together, redefining how connection and creativity happen in a digital space.
Designed by industrial designer and project lead Woojin Jang and his team, this innovative system combines two essential elements—Cake and Butter—to recreate the joy of real-time jam sessions, no matter the distance.
It’s a concept built around the belief that music should be shared freely, without the burden of heavy gear or studio constraints, while keeping the emotional depth and human rhythm of live performance intact.
At the heart of Hotcake, Cake functions as a modular speaker system with three individual speakers and a central subwoofer station. It produces spatial audio that gives players the sensation of performing side by side, even when continents apart.
The system maintains perfect synchronization through wired Ethernet, ensuring that every beat, chord, and voice arrives without lag or distortion.
Each module communicates over a 2.4GHz RF channel, transmitting real-time sound from the station to every connected unit. The result is an authentic sense of timing and space—a genuine musical dialogue conducted across digital borders.
Butter, the wearable companion, brings another layer of intimacy. Through haptic feedback, it turns sound into touch, allowing players to feel the pulse and resonance of the music.
This physical dimension adds emotional weight, transforming an online session into something tangible and expressive.
Whether used as a rhythm guide or set to metronome mode, Butter delivers subtle vibrations that mirror every beat, helping musicians stay connected not only through sound but through sensation.
It also features a built-in microphone, enabling conversation and coordination among bandmates as naturally as if they were in the same studio.
Hotcake’s design captures a moment where technology and emotion intersect with precision. It removes the friction of distance, giving musicians a fluid way to create and share without compromise.
The modular build, real-time responsiveness, and tactile engagement make it an evolution in musical collaboration—an ecosystem where performance feels spontaneous, immediate, and human.
