Nick Gill’s “The Sum Of It” takes the simple realization that nobody can be everything another person needs and builds a song around the sadness that comes with accepting it. Gill says the idea arrived while listening to a podcast about people dating multiple partners to meet different needs, and his response was write a song about what the idea made him feel.
The track also carries the looseness of its creation. Gill recorded it in about three hours, brought in Jordy Searcy for lead guitar, and sent the finished recording to Adam Grover for mastering. That quick process fits a song that began with a thought arriving in the middle of something else. The idea was already there, and the recording gave it somewhere to go.
“The Sum Of It” keeps its focus on an uncomfortable limit: one person cannot fulfill every need another person has. There is sadness in that realization, but also something plain about it. Sometimes a small idea from a podcast is enough to make you pick up a guitar and spend three hours figuring out what you think.
