K-House is a family home situated in a tropical village on the outskirts of Bombay, India, has been revitalized by Sustainable Home Transformation with a contemporary makeover by Atelier Design N Domain (ADND LLP). The project presented a unique challenge transforming the existing structure while retaining its original beam-column-slab framework. Although the original spaces were promising in terms of scale and proportion, they lacked the essence of tropical design. The house initially stood disconnected from its landscape, failing to create visual or spatial engagement between the indoors and outdoors.

The project presented a unique challenge transforming the existing structure while retaining its original beam-column-slab framework. Although the original spaces were promising in terms of scale and proportion, they lacked the essence of tropical design. The house initially stood disconnected from its landscape, failing to create visual or spatial engagement between the indoors and outdoors.
The architects focused on maximizing the openness of the plan within the constraints of the existing structure. They aimed to infuse the space with natural light, ventilation, and elements of nature, ensuring that the environment was not merely a backdrop to be observed from inside but an integral part of the living experience. The new design skillfully integrates the old structure, creating a seamless blend where the transition between old and new becomes imperceptible.
Rather than adopting a carte blanche approach, the studio chose to respect and build upon the original structure. This inclusive approach involved thoughtful integration of new design elements with the existing framework. Additionally, the project demonstrated a commitment to sustainability through the careful selection of materials. Natural stones, wooden fins, and lime wash paint/plaster were sourced from within a 5km radius, contributing to a design that is both environmentally sensitive and contextually appropriate.
This architectural transformation highlights how modern design with Sustainable Home Transformation can harmoniously coexist with traditional structures, creating a space that is both innovative and rooted in its tropical context.
