The Upsides: Say Follow

The Upsides: Say Follow

The Upsides construct “Say Follow” around driving guitars that strip the pursuit of self-reliance of romanticism. The arrangement relies on an insistent chorus to replicate the exhaustion of constant self-evaluation. A repeated lyric, “you don’t want it enough,” operates as the central anchor, stranding the narrator within the rules of a competitive game. This opening treats achievement not as a victory, but as a forced withdrawal from community.

The central choice relies on tracking the pride that keeps a person from asking for help. The narrator follows the rules alone, turning the driving guitars into a boundary wall rather than an avenue for escape. The chorus repeats the cycle, stripping away melodic release to emphasize the routine of proving oneself. The vocals deliver the words without decoration, turning the final lines into a direct confrontation with isolation.

Austin Asvanonda mixed the track, with additional production from Nick Perri. The new credits replace the anthemic choruses of the band’s 2024 self-titled debut album with a heavier rhythm. Dream Wolf Records issued the single as the first release for the independent alternative label founded by Miles Paterson. The final notes cut off before the loop can resolve.
