Foster + Partners develops a cutting-edge concept design for Dubai vertiport terminal

Exciting news for Dubai’s future of transportation has emerged from the World Government Summit 2023, as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has endorsed the provisional concept design for a Skyports Infrastructure vertiport terminal located next to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Developed in collaboration with Foster + Partners, the DXB vertiport concept is one of four locations being considered by Skyports Infrastructure and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for a future electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) infrastructure network.

The DXB vertiport is set to be a game-changer for Dubai’s advanced air mobility (AAM) industry, providing a high-speed, zero-emissions travel option that connects the city’s most popular and populous areas. The network of vertiports will integrate seamlessly with existing transportation hubs such as the Dubai Metro network and Dubai International Airport.

The futuristic terminal will be situated on an elevated deck, allowing for efficient aircraft take-off and landing. The building will wrap around the airfield, providing stunning views of both the aircraft and the city skyline. Its overhanging roof and façade inclination will protect the building from direct sunlight and prevent overheating. The building’s design corresponds with the adjacent metro station and features green landscaping to soften its edges.

David Summerfield, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, expressed his excitement for the project, saying, “We are delighted to have developed a vertiport concept for the emerging AAM industry, which will transform the way people travel in Dubai.” The RTA and Skyports Infrastructure plan to have the network of vertiports ready for air taxi services by 2026, promising a bright and sustainable future for Dubai’s transportation system.
