Gregory Ackerman: Spooky

Gregory Ackerman: Spooky

Gregory Ackerman’s “Spooky” brings a fresh take to the Classics IV original, with a backwards guitar solo as its main twist. Recorded with his friend Keenan McDaniel on an 8-track tape machine, the cover keeps the Halloween spirit of the original while giving the two musicians room to play around with it.

The reversed guitar part takes inspiration from Stephen Stills, adding an unusual touch to a song that already has a distinct place in Halloween music. It’s a small detour, but one that changes the character of the arrangement without pulling it too far from the original. Ackerman and McDaniel recorded the whole cover on tape, keeping the process hands-on and giving the release a personal touch. Their version is a chance to revisit a familiar song, have some fun with it, and add a backwards guitar solo to the mix.
