Violet Pixel by Marius Boekhorst transforms flowers into an abstract glass sculpture

Marius Boekhorst introduces Violet Pixel, a new edition of his Violet glass sculpture that transforms flowers into an abstract composition through patterned glass. The work continues the designer’s investigation of familiar materials and their visual possibilities, bringing together geometric forms, floral arrangements and optical distortion. Its fragmented imagery creates an unexpected connection between traditional decorative glass and the pixelated appearance of digital images.

The sculpture uses the textured surface of patterned glass to interrupt the colors and outlines of the flowers behind it. Petals dissolve into irregular patches of color, producing an image that resembles an abstract painting. The glass becomes a canvas, while the flowers provide the paint. Although entirely physical, the resulting composition has a pixelated quality, with individual details appearing to separate into smaller visual elements.

Violet Pixel operates between two-dimensional imagery and three-dimensional sculpture. Its geometric construction contains a floral still life that changes according to the viewer’s position. From certain angles, the flowers remain partially recognizable; from others, their forms become increasingly ambiguous. Transparency, distance and the glass’s textured surface determine how much of the arrangement can be seen, creating a composition that cannot be experienced from a single viewpoint.

The project also revisits the nostalgic character of patterned glass, a material commonly associated with domestic windows and interior partitions. Boekhorst draws attention to its ability to simultaneously reveal and obscure, using a familiar functional property to create an artistic effect. In Violet Pixel, this everyday material becomes a means of translating organic forms into fragmented imagery, connecting the physical qualities of glass with the visual language of contemporary abstraction.
