ISAAK by Ditroit reimagines human and machine collaboration through art

ISAAK, created by Ditroit in collaboration with ABB, transformed the Dream gallery during Milan Design Week 2025 into a stage for human–machine interaction. The installation examined the evolving relationship between robotics and creativity, showing how technology can extend beyond industrial functionality to achieve poetic presence.

Within the transparent storefront, ABB’s robotic arm became the artist itself, translating the data it captured from visitors into expressive hand-drawn portraits. Each gesture connected human perception and algorithmic interpretation, turning a technical process into an act of shared imagination and authorship.

At its core, ISAAK transformed industrial precision into artistic gesture. The installation’s robotic arm, guided by a custom algorithm, captured each visitor’s likeness through a webcam and interpreted it through a visual language rooted in abstraction.

The outcome was neither mechanical replication nor digital simulation, but a unique analog portrait, drawn in real time by the robot’s fine motor skills. Every line was an act of interpretation, transforming raw information into physical traces that embodied both computational logic and human emotion.

The system functioned through a complex process of data translation. The software analyzed the captured image, generated several possible variations, and selected one to convert into vector coordinates.

These coordinates were transmitted to the robot, which, equipped with a marker, performed its drawing on paper with smooth, coordinated gestures. The finished piece, gifted to the visitor, served as tangible proof of collaboration between algorithmic intelligence and human individuality.

ABB’s collaborative robot, one of the most compact and adaptable of its generation, formed the tangible structure of ISAAK. Designed for precision and safety in human environments, its two articulated arms moved in synchrony, their mechanical rhythm echoing the cadence of an artist at work.

Seven rotary axes allowed it to operate with graceful dexterity, embodying the craftsmanship of a trained hand. The mechanical body was complemented by a software system that served as its creative consciousness—processing data, generating abstractions, and interpreting the essence of each portrait with a consistent yet individual style.

What defined Ditroit’s ISAAK as more than a technological demonstration was its capacity for emotional connection. By transforming analysis into gesture, it presented robotics not as a cold mechanism but as a medium for expression.

The installation’s process revealed a delicate balance between human intuition and machine intelligence, between the spontaneity of the subject and the precision of code.

ABB’s expertise in robotics found a poetic counterpart in Ditroit’s vision, forming a collaboration where technology and art met through shared purpose rather than contrast.

Behind ISAAK’s performance lay an intricate dialogue between three interconnected software environments. The system’s design allowed instantaneous input, processing, and output, all converging in the analog act of drawing.

Each portrait emerged as a synthesis of digital computation and physical presence—a contemporary interpretation of portraiture where identity, data, and creativity coexist in harmony.

Through this encounter, ISAAK reframed robotics as a channel for imagination, redefining what it means to create in an age of intelligent machines.
