METAXIS exhibition by FUTUREFORMS examines digital craft and design process at CCA
FUTUREFORMS presents METAXIS: A Collection of Ideas and Objects, an exhibition at the California College of the Arts Campus Gallery in San Francisco that examines the studio’s design process across art, architecture, and computational practice.
Led by Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno, the Bay Area–based studio has developed a reputation for activating public space through digitally driven design. With METAXIS, FUTUREFORMS shifts the focus from finished installations to the ideas, prototypes, and material experiments that shape its work.

On view through March 20, 2026, the exhibition gathers more than 20 models, 3D-printed prototypes, and speculative artifacts produced between 2015 and 2025. These objects document a decade of research in digital craft, a design approach that treats computational tools as instruments of making.
Through algorithmic processes and advanced fabrication methods, FUTUREFORMS develops spatial forms that move from digital experimentation to built environments. The exhibition allows visitors to encounter these transitional stages, presenting the studio’s work as a continuous dialogue between concept, technology, and material production.

The title METAXIS refers to the Greek word metaxi, describing a condition of existing between two realms. This idea frames the exhibition as an investigation into the spaces between ideas and objects, perception and imagination, and digital models and physical artifacts.
Installed in a format that recalls a studio visit, the gallery places early studies alongside more developed pieces, revealing how FUTUREFORMS builds its projects through iteration and testing. The exhibition shows how architecture, art, and computational design intersect in the studio’s approach to creating spatial experiences.

METAXIS: A Collection of Ideas and Objects is presented at the California College of the Arts Campus Gallery at 1480 17th Street in San Francisco. The public program includes a closing lecture on March 19, 2026 at 5:00pm at the CCA Main Building, followed by a gallery reception at 6:30pm. After its presentation at CCA, the exhibition will travel to the University of Virginia’s Elmaleh Gallery in September 2026.
