Houyou lamp highlights texture and resilience of natural bark

The HOUYOU table lamp, part of the JUHI SERIES by Kazuki Nagasawa, is an eloquent study in the dialogue between natural material and contemporary design.

Crafted from the bark of the Trachycarpus plant, also known as shuro palm, the piece channels the organic logic of protection and resilience, reinterpreting these qualities into an object of functional beauty.

The design does not mimic nature but instead extracts its essence, allowing material truth to guide form and presence.

Through a process of careful transformation, the bark is treated with persimmon tannin and shaped into a conical hollow form. This transformation does not conceal the bark’s inherent qualities but heightens them, emphasizing its textures, tonal shifts, and quiet irregularities.

The Houyou lamp articulates how an ordinary fragment of nature can become a medium of illumination both physically and poetically. Each detail underlines the importance of tactility and impermanence, offering a piece that carries a deep resonance beyond utility.

A metal cap fitted at the top contains the integrated light source, turning the lamp into a portable fixture. This engineered anchor represents the inner strength of the bark, a subtle reference to the fibrous tension that supports the trunk of the palm in nature.

The structural logic of the Houyou lamp mirrors the tree’s anatomy, where external layers protect and internal fibers endure. This conceptual translation allows the piece to stand as an object that is both symbolic and practical.

When illuminated, the Houyou lamp enacts a transformation that reveals the latent spirit of its material. The light is directed downward, yet it radiates through the shade, activating the organic surface in subtle, unpredictable ways.

Texture shifts, veins become visible, and tonal nuances flicker into presence, as though the bark were responding to light in real time. The lamp embodies a dynamic quality: not static furniture, but an evolving visual experience shaped by interaction with its surroundings.

The design language also carries a gesture of intimacy. The conical form that encases the light suggests an embrace, an act of holding something precious within. This symbolic association gave rise to the name HOUYOU, meaning “Embrace.”

It evokes both a human gesture and a natural process of protection, uniting emotional resonance with the structural role of the material. Through this poetic lens, the Houyou lamp transcends decorative function and becomes an expression of coexistence between natural and crafted worlds.
