Snøhetta’s Lech Mountain Mirror reflects the Alpine landscape in Austria

Snøhetta has completed Lech Mountain Mirror, a landscape art installation located on the roof of the Zugerbergbahn mountain station in Lech, Austria. The project introduces a reflective water basin into the Alpine environment, creating an elevated viewing platform where the surrounding peaks, passing clouds, and changing weather become part of the experience. Completed in 2026 for Lech Bergbahnen AG, the intervention transforms an existing transport facility into a public destination that encourages visitors to engage with the mountain landscape through observation and movement.

The installation consists of a shallow expanse of water that reflects the surrounding mountains and sky, producing an image that continuously changes with atmospheric conditions. On clear days, the surface acts as a mirror, capturing the contours of the Alpine panorama with remarkable precision. Wind introduces ripples that fragment these reflections, creating shifting compositions of water, clouds, and mountains. Through this simple arrangement, Snøhetta allows natural elements to determine the installation’s visual character, making every encounter dependent on the weather and time of day.

A sequence of stepping stones extends across the water basin, guiding visitors toward a natural rock that emerges from its surface. Positioned as an observation point, the stone offers a place to pause while surrounded by reflected scenery. The movement across the water establishes a physical relationship between the visitor and the installation, turning an otherwise familiar mountain view into an immersive experience. As people approach the rock, their own reflections become part of the composition, introducing another changing element to the landscape.

Beyond the reflective basin, Snøhetta has incorporated landscaped areas designed for rest and contemplation. Larch wood lounging surfaces, natural stone boulders, and various seating arrangements provide spaces to spend time outdoors while overlooking the surrounding terrain. The choice of natural materials connects the intervention to its Alpine setting, while the combination of seating and accessible viewing areas encourages visitors to remain beyond their arrival at the cable car station. The installation is open to the public free of charge, extending its role from an artistic intervention to a recreational space.

The project forms part of a broader initiative to develop Lech as a year-round destination. Although the Zugerbergbahn mountain station was completed several years earlier, the cable car has also operated during the summer season since 2024. Lech Mountain Mirror contributes to this development by introducing a cultural attraction independent of winter sports. It joins an established programme of art projects in the region, including Antony Gormley’s Horizon Field and James Turrell’s Skyspace Lech, both of which engage with the relationship between artistic perception and the Alpine environment.

For Snøhetta, the installation demonstrates how a relatively restrained landscape intervention can alter the experience of an existing place. Instead of introducing a prominent architectural structure, the project uses water, stone, and the surrounding terrain to create an encounter that changes throughout the day. Patrick Lüth, partner and managing director of Snøhetta Studio Innsbruck, describes the work as a way of turning infrastructure into a sensory experience. Lech Mountain Mirror ultimately draws attention to the mountain landscape itself, offering visitors a different perspective through reflection, movement, and the continuous presence of natural conditions.
