Architects Claerhout – Van Biervliet, a renowned architectural firm led by Xaveer Claerhout and Barbara Van Biervliet, presents their latest groundbreaking project titled “PERISCOPE – Reality displacement as space enhancer and energy storage device.”
This mesmerizing creation, developed in collaboration with artist Adriaan Claerhout, explores the concept of reality displacement while seamlessly integrating enhanced living spaces with energy storage capabilities. Through the ingenious use of periscope architecture, this artwork pushes the boundaries of conventional design and offers a fresh perspective on space utilization.
Unlocking the Power of Periscope Architecture
With the increasing scarcity of available construction space, the need for innovative architectural solutions has become paramount. Enter periscope architecture, a highly inventive concept that not only challenges conventions but also introduces an entirely new reality. Imagine the ability to observe your surroundings from beneath the earth’s surface, free from the constraints of traditional building structures.
By constructing below ground level, the typically dreary basement ambiance is banished, giving rise to a remarkable microclimate within the building. The design features two mirrored walls positioned at a perfect 45-degree angle, capable of vertical movement.
These mirrors can be independently raised and lowered, providing visual access to additional underground floors. The periscope system breathes life into space like never before, offering captivating visual and spatial possibilities.
The Power Within: Gravity Battery Architecture
Harnessing the energy of the sun, solar-powered synchronized servo engines raise the mirror components during the day, illuminating the underground space and revealing breathtaking views of the landscape. As twilight descends, the mirror elements gracefully descend, seamlessly merging with the ground once more.
Through the use of ball spindles and electric generators, the building enters a “sleep mode,” transforming this dormant state into reusable energy. The periscope structure not only captivates with its architectural qualities but also serves as an eco-conscious energy solution, embracing sustainability and efficiency.
Metamorphic Synergy: Where Artistry and Sustainability Converge
At the core of Metamorphic Art Studio’s fascination lies the creation of an innovative, state-of-the-art building that seamlessly blends sustainability, metamorphosis, and a reverence for the spatial traditions found in Roman and Palladian villas. Periscope architecture transcends mere reflection; it empowers the ability to shift reality itself.
By merging metamorphic architecture with multifunctional mirrors that double as screens, integrated as periscopes, the boundaries between the virtual and physical realms dissolve harmoniously. This synergy between artistry and sustainability paves the way for immersive experiences that integrate the physical and virtual worlds seamlessly.
Metamorphic Art Studio: Shaping a Metamorphic Reality
Metamorphic Art Studio, comprising visionary architects and artists, strives to shape a metamorphic reality by bridging the gap between the physical and virtual worlds. While many contemporary artists focus on recreating the physical world virtually, this studio takes a bold and innovative approach.
They aim to bring the physical world closer to the captivating realms of the virtual, embracing a metamorphic reality where certain aspects of artifacts undergo profound physical transformations. In this uncharted territory where the virtual and morphing physical worlds converge, art, architecture, and design intertwine to create smart, sustainable, organic, and truly immersive experiences in four dimensions.
In September 2008, during the exhibition of Abitare il Tempo in Verona, Xaveer Claerhout and Barbara Van Biervliet introduced the term “Metamorphic Architecture” for the first time. They unveiled groundbreaking works such as the ‘Kinetower’ and the first prototypes of metamorphic luminaires, including the ‘
