StudioAC’s South Bay Residence creates a calm dialogue between rural life and contemporary design

South Bay Residence by StudioAC occupies a flat rural parcel in Ontario, a few hours east of Toronto. The site faces north toward a vast open field, bordered by a gentle grove and a shoreline populated with varied trees.

These natural elements became integral to the project’s architectural approach, informing both orientation and spatial rhythm.

The design introduces three offset “living bars” that intersect across the site. Rather than a continuous linear mass, these volumes generate outdoor microclimates that protect from wind, shape sunlight, and frame selective views.

Their shifting arrangement creates a fluid sequence of outdoor thresholds, producing distinct atmospheres through the seasons and inviting different perspectives of the surrounding landscape.

Within this spatial framework, the main living areas adopt a rotated proportional logic. Where previous StudioAC projects aligned rooms along a shared long axis, South Bay Residence turns that system ninety degrees.

The result is a 48-foot by 12-foot living zone whose expanded façade faces directly toward the landscape. From the dining table or sofa, floor-to-ceiling glazing removes architectural interruption, allowing the horizon to fill peripheral vision and drawing attention entirely outward.

Above, the roof structure introduces a sculptural counterpoint to the horizontal terrain. Comprising three mirrored shed forms, the roofs intersect at the main living bar, creating protected terraces beneath a shared canopy.

This roofscape sheds water efficiently while producing a subtle topography that animates the silhouette of the house. Its shifting geometry enhances spatial volume inside and reinterprets familiar rural typologies through a contemporary lens.

The interior palette remains restrained and tactile. Plywood clads most surfaces, while white walls are introduced strategically below a datum defined by the roof geometry to highlight artwork.

Wet rooms, including an indoor spa, are finished in contrasting tile, establishing a textural dialogue between warm wood and cool ceramic. Natural light accentuates the material precision, giving depth to the quiet simplicity of each surface.

Although the form may appear complex, it stems from simple volumetric ideas and vernacular cues. Its character emerges from the measured play of proportion, intersection, and alignment with the landscape.

South Bay Residence by StudioAC becomes not just a dwelling but a lens through which its occupants perceive the environment—a place where architecture and nature continuously shape one another.
