Earthboat Cave timber retreat by PAN- PROJECTS near Lake Shirakaba
Set along the forested edge of Lake Shirakaba, Earthboat Cave by PAN- PROJECTS is presented as a compact timber retreat shaped for quiet stays within a natural setting. Built from Japanese cedar CLT and placed directly on the terrain without foundations, the structure maintains a gentle footprint, allowing the site to remain intact.
Large openings orient the interior toward the lake’s most scenic view, guiding attention outward while supporting a pace defined by calm observation. An outdoor sauna, stepped platforms, and small fireplaces extend daily life into the open air, offering an experience that remains tightly connected to the surrounding forest.

Earthboat Cave stands as a modest accommodation that maintains a close relationship with its lakeside environment. The project follows Earthboat’s philosophy of “nature escape,” providing a setting that contrasts with dense city conditions and supports time spent in quieter surroundings.
Japanese cedar CLT shapes the entire structure, its surfaces left untreated so the timber can age naturally and register seasonal changes. With no fixed foundation, the cabin can be relocated if necessary, reinforcing a low-impact approach that avoids disturbance to the ground.

Earthboat Cave is arranged around outdoor living as its central principle. Rather than prioritizing enclosure, the architecture supports a life that unfolds outside.
A compact sauna provides warmth in the mountain climate, and nearby exterior elements encourage visitors to rest, gather, and remain connected to the atmosphere of the forest. The cabin itself becomes a steady point within the environment, providing the essential comforts required to linger for longer periods.

Inside, the arrangement is minimal and tactile. The primary opening frames the lake with precision, allowing the water and surrounding hills to determine the interior mood.
Light moves across the cedar surfaces throughout the day, shifting with the changing weather. Space is organized for quiet routines—cooking, resting, watching the lake—while maintaining a continuous relationship with the landscape beyond the walls.

The architecture holds a reserved character, allowing the forest to maintain visual and spatial priority. Every component, from the sauna to the exterior steps, strengthens awareness of the natural conditions and encourages a slower rhythm of stay.
Earthboat Cave extends the ongoing Earthboat series, which investigates how compact, mobile CLT structures can support new forms of hospitality across Japan’s varied terrains. Each installation aligns itself with its environment while sharing an ethos of calm retreat, offering visitors a moment to “escape” into nature.
