Gabriel Tan Lamps
Renowned designer Gabriel Tan introduces his latest creation, “Good Gourd – Hybrid Basketry Lamps”, set to debut at Future Impact 2 during Milan Design Week 2024. These vibrant table lamps seamlessly blend traditional basket-weaving techniques with modern 3D-printed resin structures, embodying a harmonious fusion of craftsmanship and digital innovation.
Tan’s innovative approach aims to bridge the gap between traditional crafts and digital fabrication, which typically operate within separate spheres. By showcasing the compatibility of these seemingly disparate methods, he highlights their potential synergy as a sustainable solution for contemporary urban artisans.
Through this project, Tan underscores the pivotal role of technology in revitalizing traditional handcrafts, making them more accessible and appealing to younger generations of artisans. Crafted by the skilled hands of Spanish artisan Idoia Cuesta, the feature intricate hand-woven designs using recyclable monofilament nylon fishing lines, meticulously layered over 3D-printed recyclable PMMA structures. This marriage of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology not only reduces human labor but also enhances the lamps’ durability and environmental sustainability.
