Sculpting the Senses: The Iris van Herpen Exhibition at the Musée des Arts décoratifs

Sculpting the Senses: Bridging Couture and Innovation

Embark on a journey of sartorial ingenuity as the Musée des Arts décoratifs opens its doors to the Iris van Herpen. Sculpting the Senses exhibition, a celebration of the avant-garde vision of one of the most groundbreaking fashion designers. From November 29, 2023, to April 28, 2024, visitors will be immersed in the world of Iris van Herpen, a trailblazer who seamlessly melds traditional Couture craftsmanship with cutting-edge technologies.

Situated within the elegant confines of the Christine & Stephen A. Schwarzman Galleries, this exhibition transcends the ordinary, challenging conventional norms of clothing. Iris van Herpen’s artistic prowess, expressed through over a hundred haute couture pieces, engages in a captivating dialogue with contemporary art. The exhibition features works by luminaries such as Philip Beesley, the Collectif Mé, Wim Delvoye, Kate MccGwire, Damien Jalet, Kohei Nawa, Casey Curran, Rogan Borwn, Jacques Rougerie, and design pieces by Neri Oxman, Ren Ri, Ferruccio Laviani, and Tomáš Libertíny.

From micro to macro, the exhibition prompts contemplation on the spatial relationship between the body, attire, and the environment. It delves into the future of the human form in a rapidly evolving world. The eclectic selection not only showcases Iris van Herpen’s extraordinary creations but also draws parallels with contemporary art and items from the natural sciences. Skeletons, fossils, and historical artifacts weave a narrative that transcends time, creating a unique resonance with the past and present.

Curated by the insightful Cloé Pitiot, along with assistant curator Louise Curtis, the exhibition’s scenography is in the capable hands of the Studio Nathalie Crinière. Together, they orchestrate an immersive experience that transports visitors into the visionary realm of Iris van Herpen, where the boundaries between tradition and innovation dissolve.
